SOLD Antique Japanese two section futon tansu. The upper section has double sliding burl wood panel doors which house a roomy storage interior. The bottom section is comprised of six burl front drawers with decorative cloud design locks.

The top section has two sliding doors with slats, and an open compartment inside with two drawers. The bottom section has an open storage compartment behind another pair of sliding doors, with five drawers and a lock safe.

SOLD Antique Japanese two-section Cho-ba tansu (merchants chest) made from hinoki (cypress) wood. Its top section has two large sliding panels with beautiful molded handles and three small drawers. The bottom section have multiple drawers, some with brass keyholes that have been etched with attractive designs, and two more sets of sliding panels. The bottom, slatted panels hide a secret compartment with a small storage drawer. Early 20th century-Taisho Period

SOLD Japanese two-section Keyaki Nihonmatsu tansu with a black lacquered frame, a corner lockbox with iron plating and hinged door, four long drawers with iron hardware, warabite handles and iron locks at their center with a the image of a tsuru (crane) flying over a kame (turtle). The tsuru and kame are sacred creatures in Asian culture, each a symbol for longevity, and are said to live one thousand and ten thousand years respectively. The tsuru is said to turn black if it lives to two thousand year...

SOLD Beautiful two-section keyaki (zelkova) tansu with a gorgeous, glowing honey lacquered front and red lacquered top and sides. Its features include large, decorative iron lockplates incised with auspicious symbols, warabite handles with pierced backplates, a lockbox that is, interestingly, on the top section rather than the bottom, with three red-lacquered drawers inside. All original finnish, Dates from the Meiji period (1868-1912).

The chest's four front drawers feature large, round Kiri wood mon (family crest) motif lock plates , while the Warabite style drawer pulls have small pierced plates below them in the style of a crane mon. The bottom section holds a small corner safe door with two small drawers inside.

SOLD Beautiful, yet unusual two-section tansu from the Nigata region of Japan, made from kiri wood. Reddish brown lacquer has been applied to its hardware to give it a very nice contrast to the woodgrain. It has four large drawers with gunbai style iron handles mounted upon pierced and stylized mounts, with a large fan-shaped lockplate in its center, pierced hardware along the front frame between each drawer, and quarter-circle hardware in the drawer corners. Made from Kiri wood (paulownia) front with Sugi (cedar) wood frame Its drawers open with iron mokko/melon style handles, and with large, round lock plates incised with kiri leaf mon as well as fan-shaped corner hardware. Side lockbox has two small drawers within.
Original Charming lacquer finish.
