Say the word 'Momoyama' to any Japanese pottery connoisseurs, and their eyes will inevitably light up. Most ceramic enthusiasts would give up any Saturday-night vice to own just one Momoyama Shino, Bizen or Karatsu guinomi (sake cup) or chawan (tea bowl). Here is another Momoyama item from our collection:

A rare and very finely caste heavy bronze (copper tin alloy) incense burner in the form of a playful crouching 'lion'. This item was made in Ming dynasty China probably during the 16th or early 17th Century. Condition: the cover is missing; otherwise very good. Max length 35 cm.(13.75 inches), max height 18.5 cm.(7.25 inches). Weight circa 6.7 kilos (14lbs 12 oz).

In bhumisparsa mudra. Quite rare because of the openwork stand with elephants. 16th century or possibly earlier. H. 20,5 cm. Minor damage to the stand and to the ushnisha. Lovely agewear and patina. Rare item. From a Dutch private collection.

A rare and wonderful Chinese porcelain bowl with beautiful glaze designs of cranes flying over crashing waters, each carrying a different object of auspicious nature, such as a lotus, a scroll, a fan, a sword, a gourd bottle, and a basket of fruit. Brightly multicolored clouds fill empty space between each bird. The inside of the bowl has a single crane flying over identical wave motifs with smoke clouds with minor wear. Excellent condition. A rare and genuine Bronze OPIUM WEIGHT OF TOE-MYTHICAL LION from Burma, ca. 1680. Octagonal Base (nearly circular) with curvilinear mouldings over the chest and face. Distorted half cylinder shaped kutsugata tea bowl of light, unrefined Mino clay.

The expertly thrown body, heavily trimmed with a potters knife (hera) is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxid glaze inside and outside. Obviously due to a lack of manganese here it is more a dark brown, which is rare to find on Oribe chawans.
