Some folds apparent in the iron, tekkotsu ("iron bones" describing irregularities in surface resulting from gradual wearing away of softer iron, leaving more refined, harder iron), rim slightly raised around the hammered plate. Little distorted half cylinder shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl - made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxide glaze inside and outside, leaving 2 unglazed 'windows' on opposite sites. One 'window' is decorated with ivy or vine leaves. The other 'window' shows flying birds in iron oxide glaze which has been covered with a clear ash and feldspar glaze. A woven silver hoya caps the smoky white glaze of this Momoyama period (early 17th century) Shino Koro incense burner wrapped in antique imported ikat and enclosed in a kiri-wood box. It is roughly 8 x 8 x 9 cm (3 x 3 x 3-1/2 inches). The rim has been ground to smoothly accept the silver lid, and it is in excellent condition.

Slightly distorted cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay. Shape and style make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls. The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical black oniita engobe inside and outside - with the exception of the bottom - over which a white, feldspatic Shino glaze has been poured.

17th Century Chinese Gilt Lacquered Bronze Scholar Figure

It is 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) tall by 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide. It is 1049 gram.
