There have been decorative textiles sewn into squares or rectangular shapes since the Edo period in Japan. The small squares are made for tea ceremonies; the medium to larger sized ones (called fukusa) are used to cover seasonal and ceremonial gifts. Antique Shan State Bronze RAIN BUDDHA on original Platform/Base. 18th Century, Burma. The Buddha is refined and serene with downcast eyes and both arms pendant by the sides in "Calling for Rain" position. Nice natural Verdigris patina and difficult to find. One of the back base supports has been repaired, but is inconsequential and unnoticeable. Size: H. 10cm x W. 3.5cm x D. 9 cm.
