This piece is unusual as it shows a very light color of the zitan wood which is probably close to the bark area. There are two holes drilled in the piece for attaching a string for hanging. The base carries a Xuande reign mark but this item was made later, probably circa 1795-1850 during the reign of the Jiaqing or Daoguang emperors. I feel that it is rarer than huanghuali. I have only come across one Nanmu scholar's chest in all the years that I have been collecting.
