Japanese Mid 20th Century print of "White Heron in the Rain" by IDE GAKUSUI (1899-1982). Signed and stamped by artist in lower right hand corner. Also, title and date in lower right hand border. Printed in Showa 25, or 1950. The feathers of the heron are embossed. Fine color and impression. This is the first printing of this famous print. A posthumous edition was printed in HEISEI period. The paper measures 10 1/4" wide by 15 3/8" tall. The print measures 9" wide by 14 3/8" tall.

A nicely carved jade pig done in the Han style. Pigs represent prosperity and jade pigs were were placed in the hands of the deceased. Many jade pigs were used for this purpose in later times and are sometimes mistaken for Han pieces. Size: L.10cm. H. 2.8cm. W. 2.3cm. Condition: No chips. Some calcification.

From our Japanese Collection, a good kutani baluster-shaped jar and cover, Meiji Period (1868-1912), executed in traditional kutani palette of iron-red, green, yellow, and gilt highlights, depicting a continuous scene of figures gathered around the circumference of the piece. From our Southeast Asia Collection, a contemporary but very beautiful Burmese shwei-zawa wall hanging from Pagan, Burma, executed in brilliant gold leaf against a shiny black lacquer ground. The scene depicted is most likely something from the Jataka Tales (the stories of the previous lives of the Buddha), though we are not positive which exact scene is being portrayed. This is a beautiful Japanese Porcelain Charger or shallow bowl. It just glows. The work is very similar to the work we have seen done by the Fukagawa or Koransha factory but it is not signed. Condition is excellent. There is a minor factory smear of gold on the front center. It can bee seen in the images. This might why the piece is not signed. It can bee seen in the images. The charger is 12 5/8 inches across and has deep sides making it 2 1/4 inches tall.

DESCRIPTION: A Chinese pendant with coral colored stone mounted as a brooch in high relief with a scholar standing under a twisting pine in a mountain setting. The rectangular gilt frame is cast as four bamboo stalks and has a sturdy open “mesh” backing fitted with a stick pin and gold loop so that it can be worn as a brooch or necklace. Very fine work overall with no tarnish anywhere to the gilt frame. DIMENSIONS: 2 3/8” long (6 cm) x 1 7/8” wide (4.8 cm).

This is Japanese porcelain vase from one of the great Meiji artists. It is signed Kawamoto Hansuke. The vase has a wonderful stout shape and is very heavy. It has what appears to be several firing flaws or just an unusual design to several of the flowers. The vase measures 7 1/4 tall and is 7 1/2 inches wide.

This is an early Japanese Imari vase from the last quarter of the 1800's. The leaves and flowers are painted in thick colorful enamels. There are also some gold highlights. The vase is very heavy and stoutly made. It is 10 inches tall and 8 1/2 inches wide. Condition is very good with some expected wear. Still a very fine old display piece.

This chawan was made by the 8th generation Ohi Chozaemon (1851-1927) based in Kanazawa and is done in a style known as “ameyu” or candy glazing. The glazing is a wonderful example of ameyu and, in fact, approximates the color of a caramel candied-apple. The interesting color scheme and glossy sheen make it an attractive backdrop for a frothy bowl of dark green matcha.
