Described on the wood box as a tokkuri (sake flask) with kin-kousai (metallic Iris) glaze, the size and form would allow this piece to function just as well as a small flower vase. As the name on the box suggests, the various metallic glazes in purple, bronze, and blueish-green are meant to represent the colors of the Iris that, in Japan, is associated with the expression of heroic deeds and thought to have purifying properties that help ward off evil.

This attractive pottery model of a horse & rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a relatively highly-fired pottery that has been "cold painted" in various different coloured pigments. The horse stands alert with its head turned a little to its left.
