17th century Karatsu ware Tea Bowl (Chawan) made in Kihara kiln in Kyushu region

Kihara kiln of Kyushu region was operating during the transition times between the decline of Karatsu tea ceremonial ware and the raise of Shoki-Imari ware (approx. 1624-1671).
While most of the Kihara Karatsu tea bowls are excavated pieces, and it is rare to find a bowl in such good condition.

Chinese cloisonne tea caddy that sports three roosters on the body, colorful and delightful, this cloisonne tea caddy is an eye catcher with its bright assortment of colors, condition is good with an ever so slight loss of enamel around the lids edge, two burn spots on the base bottom that was done during the manufacturing process. DESCRIPTION: A handsome Japanese hibachi, crafted from a section of kiri wood (paulownia wood) with rounded body and lacquer floral designs. Inside is the original copper liner where coals would be placed for heating or keeping a tea pot warm. Two large peony blossoms are lacquered in gold and orange on the front, with smaller leafed branches on the reverse. The stone has a lustrous patina and has a very dramatic ‘splash’ of red on both sides. It has never been carved with a designation and the base has now a shallow flake as a result of an impact on the edge, with a little powdery material showing. Further along there is a tiny bruise to the edge. These could be taken out by reducing the length by 0.4cm. Personally the chip does not worry me. In this example the red is really very strong, like a fashionable lipstick.

This sake bottle is a very rare piece among Sugimoto's works. Ordinary, shigaraki pieces are fired in the anagama fire woods kiln, however this pieces is carved and colored with pigment, And fired in the kiln with charcoal.
