Lost wax cast bronze pipe. Decoration in high relief of clouds or swirls of smoke and lotus petals. The object is massive, thick and heavy. We think it is a Khmer bronze, probably a cult object, but it may be something else altogether. What is certain is that the object is very old and that it is not a copy of the 20th century. A Siam style budha cast bronze head made at Bien Hoa professional School in Vietnam circa 1930. Nice reproduction and beautiful patina. The Bien Hoa school was created in 1906 by French administrators who, seeing Vietnamese art and culture disappear during colonization, wanted to safeguard this important Vietnamese artistic heritage. Unusual collection of 6 old “prayer cloths” from a Taoist Master’s ceremonial robe (see last enlargement). For generic purpose’s these should be considered to be from the Mien group as they came from Vietnam and are circa 50 to 60 years old- woven from handspun cotton.
