This attractively-shaped bowl was made during the 13th - 14th Century. Very similar in form and style of Chinese celadons of this period, this example is Vietnamese. The outer wall has a carved or moulded lotus petal pattern with the tips of the petals finished with incised decoration. The bowl is coated in quite a thick crackled olive-green glaze... Fine Thai Ban Chiang Incised Neolithic Pottery Jar (Ex. Christie's)
This pottery jar of rare form dates to the Ban Chiang period (c. 1500 BC - AD 300). It is heavily-potted with a rounded lower body and a wide flared mouth. The body has been decorated with incised geometric patterns. The surface colour of the pottery varies from a reddish-brown to black due to uneven conditions during firing. This finely-shaped stoneware bottle, with its pear-shaped body and wide flaring mouth, was made during the 13th - 15th Century at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. It is quite "heavily-potted" and coated in a very unusual glaze of a dark greenish-blue colour with a most attractive crackled effect. There are incised bands around the neck. This covered box of a Sawankhalok underglazed black stoneware has an unusual design including six raised bands dividing petal-shaped segments. This type of Sawankhalok ware was produced in Sisatchanelai kilns, Thailand during the fourteenth to fiftheenth centuries. Height: 11 cm. Very good condition. Provenance: Acquired in Singapore in 1990 from MoonGate, owner Mr K. T. Goh, a famous local antique dealer.
