Bronze incense burner with brown patina with shibuishi inlays. Composed of an enormous wave or a dragon also in shibuishi emerging from the waves holds the sacred pearl in its claws. The sphere cover grip represents a tengu also holding a sacred pearl in one paw. The base of the wave is decorated with small crabs and octopuses. Period: Meiji (1868-1912). Height: 51 cm.

Golden mist shrouds the aged pines draped with wisteria growing about the crashing falls on this anonymous early Edo period gold screen. A rare scene to find, rigid lines and the lavish use of gold are typical of the first half of the Edo era. The screen features a colorful brocade border with vermilion lacquer frame and has been fully remounted without re-painting. It measures 68-1/2 x 63-1/2 inches (174 x 162 cm) and is in fine condition, showing some old repairs.

Nin’ami Dohachi (born as Takahashi Mitsutoki; 1783-1855) worked in Awata until he set up a kiln in Fushimi, near Kyoto, in 1842. Dohachi was specialized in tea ceramics and was famous for his recreations of other styles in stoneware and porcelain, especially his efforts to revive the Ninsei and Kenzan styles.
