The shallow dish with a roundel containing a very finely painted coiled dragon, Danryū mon, within a double circle. The cavetto is decorated with a stenciled trellis or Chinese lie-wen design against a pale ruri background. Within the foot-rim is found an apocryphal Chinese Ming Chenghua reign mark.

A Japanese Export heart-shaped dish with an European harbour scene by Frederik Van Frytom. Arita 1680 ~ 1700. Frederik Van Frytom was a notable painter in 17th century Holland who was commissioned to produce Delft pottery samples for copying at Arita. This dish is a copy of one of a special set of five Delft dishes that were taken to Japan in 1684 and used in the tea ceremony. The moulded shape of the dish is reminiscent of silver tableware...

An Arita foliate form dish decorated in underglaze blue with a band of auspicious shippo, cash, connoting a wish for wealth combined with mounds of evergreen Japanese Forrest grass, a symbol of longevity. An Arita Export porcelain plate in Dutch ‘Kraak’ style. A plate with the same border is illustrated in the Impey Collection “Japanese Export Porcelain, Catalogue of the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam, 2002”, item 12. The border pattern shows a striking similarity to that used for V.O.C. orders produced at the Hikeoba and Sarugawa kilns. Circa 1680.

A Japanese Arita Export porcelain spoon tray after a design by Frederik Van Frytom. Within the foot-rim is found an eccentrically written apocryphal Chinese reign mark, a feature seemingly of most wares the with Van Frytom designs. The shape is taken from an European silver dish and the porcelain clearly intended to be exported to the West.

A spoon tray of this design was included in a Christie’s auction in 2009.

Exceedingly rare hard porcelain dish from arita. Painted in yellow, green, blue and red enamels. The decor represents many children, seated in a building in front of a covered vase, perhaps a funerary urn. Dominating the assembly, the central character of a trio is the only one wearing a hat. Above the trio three Chinese characters are drawn in red on a panel. It seems to be a religious ceremony but the youth of the assembly is perplexing.
