An antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tsukue made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Two drawers used for the storage of an inkstone and brushes as well as paper for writing transaction records and receipts. The drawer interiors have minor ink stains which is a testament to its usage and function.

A beautifuly formed iron sake kettle known as a Choshi with a solid silver lid and featuring sliver inlay designs on the handle enclosed in an age darkened kiri-wood bos titled Tetsu Choshi Jungin-futa. It is 8 cm (just over 3 inches) diameter, 16 cm (6 inches) to the top of the handle, and is in excellent condition.

A very unusual set of three scrolls depicting the women of Shimabara looking down with trepidation at a Fumi-e (a Christian symbol) before lotus enclosed in a wooden box titled Shizan Shimabara-me Sanpuku Tsui (Shizan, Women of Shimabara Three Scroll Set). The Fumi-e was a bronze or wood placard embellished with a Christian symbol upon which people were forced to step to prove that they were not Christians during the ban on Christianity throughout most of the Edo period...

Unique Japanese antique clay doll, Mingei folk art of Japan, Emperor and Empress hina dolls (Dairi bina). Clay dolls were made all over Japan by the late Edo period (1603-1868) by off-season farmers which would often involve the entire family for extra income. These dolls were for the regular people (over 90 percent of the population were farmers then) who could not afford pretty hina dolls made out of cloth...

This is a clay figure of "Tenjin", the god of learning and a great and important figure in the history of Japanese culture.

It is obviously from the Mid Edo Period and one of the most impressing pieces of art in our collection with its mysterious and spiritual character.

Antique Japanese cloisonne jewelry/treasure box, made from bronze, with deep navy blue sides decorated with gold cloud shapes. The lid has a beautiful cloisonne landscape with overhanging cherry blossoms on tree branches, a tower and building with blue roofing, and a red bridge crossing over a running river. The inside of the box is inscribed "Kyoto" and has the mark of artist Inaba Nanaho of The Inaba Cloisonne Company, established in 1887. Size: 1.75" height, 3.75" width

Antique Japanese cloisonne plate with scalloped edge. The center has a beautiful depiction of humming birds in flight over chrysanthemum and peony flowers. Meiji period, 1868-1912. It measures 18" wide.

Antique Japanese cloisonne oval-shaped container with fantastic designs outlined in wire of flying birds amidst scrolling vines and blooming lotuses, with draping blue and red panels, depicting a phoenix whose tails resemble fish fins or flower petals, and a red dragon with flames and smoke clouds against a sparkling background. The main body color of the cloisonne piece is a pastel speckled yellow and its inside is a pale blue. It stands on four brass legs and sits upon a carved hardwood stand...

Antique Japanese cloisonne vase with a Chinese archaic style decoration of dragons and other stylized animals on a variegated green ground. There are two decorative bands, one around the neck and one around the body. Silver mark and Ando mark on bottom. It measures 12" tall the base is 5" wide the mouth is 7" wide. He was a famous calligrapher and engineer who invented the kana, syllabic Japanese scripts used in the Japanese writing system. Antique Japanese copper hanging lamp, Meiji period, 1868-1912. This is a beautiful lantern with panels decorated with peonies in a field of arabesques. Three smaller hanging blossoms hang off the top of the lantern. The lantern has two doors that open and are fastened shut with a decorated arm. The lower register is decorated with panels incised with a repeating wave design. The feet of the lantern are petal or leaf shaped, decorated with an incised arabesque design...
