Extremely Rare Japanese Set of Five Military Band Musicians from the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. We knew of this one-of-a-kind complete set 15 years ago, and have finally just now been allowed to purchase it. These rare sets were produced only during the Russo-Japanese War, and you will likely never see another being offered. Japan used these Ningyo for the Boys Day Festival during this time in history. Wonderful Japanese 2-panel byobu screen painting, 2 intricately painted Meiji Period fans, probably once used in a Noh performance and later mounted on a screen, each fan is painted in colorful mineral pigments with gold leaf, the fan on the left depicts white wild flowers blossoming near a meandering stream with billowing gold mist, the fan on the right is painted with a scene of 3 cranes flying over sea crests and a weeping willow tree, the two fans are mounted on a ground of gold flecks...

Antique Japanese netsuke of a boy monk fast asleep on a temple bell, carved of boxwood with painted details, signed: Kyusai (1879-1938). He carved this netsuke between the ages of 36-49, well-known for carving mokugyo, temple bells, in various themes.

A very rare and unusual Japanese 2-panel astrology screen. The blue pigmented mica-flecked screen depicts the Northern Hemisphere and shows Hokuto Shichi Sei, the 7 star constellation or the Big Dipper which points to the North Star. The celestial chart is surrounded by calligraphy naming processional years.

Japanese Boys Day Horse. This white horse is of the highest quality and artistry. Carved of palomar wood and lacquered 30 to 40 times with gofun (oyster shell lacquer) to create a naturalistic effect. It is completed with the most fabulous trappings, a fine saddle, bells, and a ponga Buddhist symbol on his back. Presented on a lacquered stand with fine gold. The high quality makes it most likely that this fine piece was made for the Daimyo class, and may have been presented to a shrine...

A very finely painted small Satsuma earthenware koro (incense burner) made in Japan during the Meiji period (1868 - 1911). The base is signed 'Kushizan' or 'Kushiyama'. Condition - excellent- no damages and no restoration...

Original woodblock print by Helen Hyde entitled "Baby Talk". One of her most famous prints. The print has "Copyright 1908 by Helen Hyde" printed within the lower left hand oval border. Fine impression and color. The title, "Baby Talk" and the print number - 178, are written in pencil. There is also the number and 64281 written in pencil below the lower middle border. The paper measures 21" wide and 13 1/2" tall. The print measures 18 3/4" wide by 12" tall.
