Japanese scroll painting of a group of scholarly skeletons. At the top of the image, three skeletons drink tea while viewing scrolls. One skeleton displays a scroll on which the artist has signed his name. Other skeletons enjoy music played on a koto while others play go, paint scrolls and make tea. Painted in sumi-e ink and light colors on paper.

He has a long beard and curly hair with a necklace with horn pendants in the shape of a chrysanthemum on his back next to the engraved signature Washūjin Kōsen 和州人 光仙, under two large himotoshi. An unusually small and rare antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kuwa (Mulberry) and Kuri (Chestnut) woods. All original bronze hardware. Two sliding doors behind which tea accessories were stored. A lift-out door behind which housed a tea canister of dried tea leaves ready for brewing. With four drawers of varying sizes to store additional tea accoutrements.

Highly unusual sculpture of two natural ruyi mushrooms ‘growing’ from a piece of wood. At the foot of the mushrooms sits a small frog.

An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal storage chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original bronze hardware including the stylized Gumbai handles and the metal embossings symbolizing the four seasons; Maple leaves on the handles representing the Fall season, Mums representing Spring, etc. Constructed using straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails.

This is an attractive early satsuma Koro or incense burner with very fine workmanship. I believe it may be pre-1900 because it appears to have been made with thicker mercury fired gold. Lid and bottom piece are both marked with a museum inventory number. The lid has been repaired and it looks quite good. The images show where it was broken. It stands about 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide. It is signed but I do not recognize the signature.

Antique Japanese isho tansu (clothing chest) from the Sendai area. Made with keyaki (zelkova elm) wood front and sugi (cryptomeria) wood frame. The chest has four large drawers, two small drawers and a safe box (with key) which opens to two small interior drawers. The hardware is made of iron and features beautiful lock plates in the form of scrolling vines with a chrysanthemum mon in the center and warabite drawer pulls...

A Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting a Shishi in a defense posture with jaws wide open and carved with an excellent finish and craftsmanship in the smallest details, accompanied by a blond color and an extraordinary patina and luster. Kara-shishi 唐獅子 (Chinese lion) resembling a lion. It is typically placed to the left of the shrine or temple door. Edo period XIX century Sizes: 3,5 x 3,7 x 2,3 cm. Condition report: Good condition

A Japanese large boxwood honeycomb with numerous hexagonal cells that contain the larvae, some of which emerge from the holes, hanging from a persimmon tree branch surrounded by wasps with horn eyes controlling the brood. Signed Tadakazu 忠一 engraved on oval horn insert. Meiji period 19th century Sizes: 8 x 10 x 10 cm. Condition report: Very Good condition

This is another rare offering as we have never seen anything like this piece before. The piece has a beautiful mix of butterflies and flowers with a gradation of tones throughout the body. It is not signed and likely could have be made by one of these artists, Hattori, Sosuke, or Kumeno. With the lid on, the jar stands 20 1/2 inches. Condition is very good but there are some slight firing flaws in the enamel, damage to an area near one of the feet and a side blemish to the enamel...

Bag made of taima or choma (hemp or ramie) whose warp and weft are hand-plied. It has the business mark and the year, Meiji 40 (1908) and the owner's name. Also, it has the place, Kusu-machi in Oita prefecture in Kyushu. In excellent condition. W:33.5cm, L:106cm
