An intricate age darkened Keyaki (elm) carving of two dragons vying for dominance in a sea of clouds, glass eyes glowing softly in the rich red wood. Dating from the later 19th century, the carving is 49 inches (125 cm) long, 4 x 1-1/2 inches (9.5 x 3.5 cm). It is overall in fine condition with some inevitable abrasions due to time. The tennons on both ends indicate this was made to be inserted between two pillars, and was likely the transom over a Buddhist altar.

An elaborate Japanese coral, silver, and gilt kanzashi (hair pin) formed as a peony spray with butterly shaped pendants hanging from silver chains. The body is made out of stronger mixed metal, Meiji/Taisho period. Kanzashi 8" long, chains 3 1/4" long.

Japanese Meiji Period lacquered comb. The base of the comb is lacquered in gold and brown lacquer with hawk and pine design. The comb has wonderful carved design of a hawk on each side with small gold inlays. Unsigned. Minor rubbing on side edges. The comb measures 3 3/8" long by 1 5/8" tall.

Beautiful Japanese ginbari cloisonne vase. At 9 1/2", this is an unusually large and desirable example among the same group. It probably dates from the Meiji period (1868-1912) when the art of Japanese cloisonné enamels reached its highest point. Technological improvements enabled artists to create wonderful examples, including one of the most desirable techniques called "ginbari" (silver foil foundation) shippo as you see it here...

A fox sits wrapped up like the Daruma, a humorous image by long time head priest of Kenninji Temple Takeda Mokurai (1854-1930) in light ink on paper. The scroll has been fully remounted in dark forest border extended with beige and features black lacquered wooden rollers. It is 18 by 47-1/2 inches (45.5 x 120.5 cm) and in excellent condition. Large Japanese antique processional temple cart, base made of keyaki (elm) wood with copper hardware, drum is also made of keyaki wood with a large brass rooster on top, wonderful condition (wheels roll!), lovely carving and lacquer detail, unusual and striking! Meiji/ Taisho Period (early 20th century). Size: 90" high x 69" long x 42 1/2" deep.

Beautiful old Japanese woven silk uchikake gown in new condition. The size of this gown is small (much shorter) and light in weight. We are not sure how gowns in this style were worn but our humble guess would be that they were either made into jackets for upper class women (style is similar to kosode from late Edo period), Noh custumes or wedding gowns (though the sleeves are short). Subtle but beautiful, will make a great wall decoration...

During the Edo period, the women of the Samurai class carried a pouch in their chest area (right above the obi belt) when they were dressed up in formal kimonos. The pouch was folded into a skinnier shape and accented with a nice tie. Carried inside were the beni ita (today's lipstick), a mirror, tissues, kanzashi, coins, etc. The chains were added to the kanzashi (hair ornament) sometime later...

A dragon wraps around the trumpeting form of this brilliant yellow vase by Makuzu Kozan II (Hanzan) enclosed in the original signed wooden box.
