Japanese antique Bugaku theatre mask for Genjoraku dance. The imperial court dance has been performed for over 12 hundred years. During the Edo Period, the dance was performed as part of shrine festivals to celebrate prosperity and peace. This mask is carved of wood with a moveable jaw. It has traces of red and colorful pigments. Mounted on a metal stand.

An antique Japanese Sendai Tansu (kimono chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Original natural Urushi lacquer and hand forged iron hardware including the stylized Mokko handles. A vine arabesque design surrounds the family crest on each of the lock plates.

Tranquil sitting Nyorai Zen Buddha on a tiered stand. Wood is hinoki or Japanese cypress. Beautifully lacquered with a gold gilt covering. The Buddha has a jeweled forehead and a swirling leaf backdrop. It sits on a lotus stand. The bottom of the stand is swirling Buddhist clouds. c.1885. (11" x 6") (28cm x 15cm). Kakemono (kakejiku), black ink (sumi-e) scroll painting on paper of a bamboo whose top is lost in the clouds evanescently. The power of the line, as traced by a single brushstroke, gives a strength synonymous with permanence in the face of the vagaries of time. Bamboo, a symbol of prosperity, is one of thte three auspicious plants, pine-bamboo-plum (shochikubai). Height approximately 2meter.

The two-tiered round mochi(round rice cake) called "Kagami-mochi",Ise lobster, bitter orange and green leaves. Painted with ink and pigments on paper. Sealed. The piece has been restored and remounted with beautiful old silk fabric, and futai tassels have been also reused from the old piece. It is inscribed Motonobu on the lid of the storage box.

The subject depicted is an offering made to welcome the New Year's god "Toshigami", and all of the decorations have a meaning...

Girl's kimono made of hand-spun cotton with flower motif which is Yuzen-zome (hand-painting). The ground cloth is benibana (safflower) dye. Benibana was grown in Yamagata prefecture in Edo period, and it was very precious. It was traded to Kyoto and dyed there for kosode kimono or others for women of a family of high-ranking samurai or merchants. Benibana dye has faded in upper back, but generally in good condition. Dragons charge the sides of this large water urn covered in crackled pale glaze emblazoned with a panel which specifies: Water for the 11 Faced Kannon (Quanyin). Inside is lined with iron glaze. Outside key frets surround the rim leading to a nearly flat shoulder upon which blossom five petaled plum flowers. Below this the dragons vie in the tempest, with the base drawing precipitously covered in Shipppo designs (7 treasures). It is 38 cm (15 inches) tall, 34 cm (13-1/2 inches) diameter...
