Japanese Mugiwara pottery emerged in the Mino region of Japan during the Momoyama period in the late 16th century. It is renowned for its distinctive straw-rope patterns etched into or painted on its surfaces that typically contains hues of indigo, mustard, hazel, ochre, and sometimes greens...

This type of tissue holder is called Hakoseko. They are still being used for very special ceremonial occasions. The older one in this quality is now a collecter's item. Hakoseko will be placed between a kimono and an obi sash with the chains dangling from the chest area. Circa, early to mid 1900s. Dimensions: 4 1/2" x 2 3/4"

Assorted group of Japanese black lacquer tea bowls and saucers for the export. Each decorated in gold with different designs. Four saucers, six small cups and one larger bowl. Condition: rims with little lacquer loss, one bowl with foot rim chip. Dimension: saucers: 11.2 cm diameter. Bowls: 5.9 cm and 6.6 cm diameter. Without wooden stands.

A pair of small Satsuma earthenware vases. Painted and gilt with panels depicting processional figures between different patterns in gold on cobalt-blue ground. Base signed Satsuma and Hotoda. Condition: few gilt rubbing. Dimension: 12.4 cm high, weight: 404 g.

An original Japanese color woodblock print by the artist Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825), in vertical oban size. Depicting two women with a boy drying and beating Cloth on the river banks. Signed "Toyokuni ga", censor "kiwame". Condition: good color and impression, some small wormholes, backed, creased and soiled, laid down at upper corners. Dimension: 36.1 cm x 24.6 cm.

A complete set of four Japanese woodblock prints in the original presentation folder by Sadanobu III Hasegawa (1881-1963), published around 1950 by Uchida. Carefully printed with embossing and shomen-zuri, laid down at upper corners. Condition: fine, only paper mats with few short tears. Dimension: sheet: 27.8 cm x 21 cm, image: 25.7 cm x 19.3 cm, folder: 35.5 cm x 26.2 cm.

A finely painted Kakiemon dish of scalloped form painted in under-glaze blue with a pair of auspicious Hoo birds amongst clouds, harbingers of good fortune, with stylised Peony branches. The reverse painted with a classic lotus scroll and a square fuku seal. Dating circa 1680-1700 and a product of the Kama-no Tsuji (Kakiemon) kiln in the Nangawara valley, note the fine pin point spurs and carefully trimmed footrim. Kappa (cape) made of cotton kasuri on both sides which are hand-spun and natural indigo dyed. It is called "maru-gappa" or "hiki-mawashi" in old days. It was worn on the occasion of travel over kimono. It has washi (Japanese handmade paper) between two cotton cloth which is washed out and soft. The word "kappa" came from Portuguese "capa". The Portuguese first came to Japan in 17th century. The piping　is made of handwoven hemp. Generally in good condition but has some holes and wear in cords...

A fine quality Kameyama-yaki auspicious Peach form, momogata, bowl delicately and painstakingly painted in the Chinese Literati style with Sansui scene for which the Kameyama kiln was renowned. The reverse decorated with auspicious Lotus motifs to the reverse and a small seal mark for the Kameyama kiln. A similar moulded dish with sprig decoration to the rim is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York (Accession number 93.3.453 and there dated 1820)...

Tani Seiuemon Shigaraki Tea Bowl (Chawan) Wood fired Natural Ash Stoneware Glazed Studio Pottery

Born in Shigaraki in 1913, Tani Seiuemon was the key person to revive old Ko-Shigaraki and Ko-Iga styles with natural ash glaze effects.
Tani Seiuemon works are exhibited in British museum and Cleveland Museum of Art.
Currently, his son Tani Q operates the family kiln in Shigarakicho.

A set of five Japanese porcelain bowls of tapering square form, the corners with shallow concave chamfers, decorated with alternating panels of flowers and Ho-0 birds.

Each base has a ‘Fuki Choshun’ four-character mark in underglaze blue.

Two similar bowls are illustrated in the Catalogue of the Shibata Collection, #2673 and #2674. Dated to 1690~1730.

Approximately 9.5 cm square at the mouth and 6.8 cm high...

A striking floral image decorates this odd shaped guinomi made to not be put down by Mizumoto Kayoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Obana Guinomi. An Obana is a male flower, or a flower with only stamens and no pistils; lacking female reproductive function. The cup is 6.5 x 12 x 7 cm (2-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 3 inches) and is in excellent condition, dating from last year.
Mizumoto Kayoko was born in Ishikawa, home to the Kutani Ceramic Tradition, in 1971...
