A lovely Japanese painting on paper of two men observing the moon. This scroll was sold on consignment by a Japanese dealer named Sakura. According to Sakura and in his opinion, this painting would date from 1800-1849, and is in fair to good condition. All genuine antique scrolls will show signs of wear and discoloration and in some cases damp staining. The painting appears to be salvaged and remounted at least 20 years ago. The scroll fits into a custom made box...

Antique Japanese woven ikat egasuri futon cover, made of a lovely indigo/navy fabric, with imagery of kiri (pauownia) leaves and squared target designs in a plaid formation. Shown folded haba style. ( Ikat patterns are woven not printed). Taisho period (1912-1925) Total size: 57" x 49"

Carved to fit the hand perfectly, this Japanese ivory page turner offers elegant design combined with function. The artists skill becomes even more evident when the page turner is held. In excellent condition save for one small shallow chip about 2-3 mm, see last photo, very hard to see, but can be felt if you run your finger slowly along the blade. The page turner measures 18.5" x 1.25".

Antique Japanese Funa Bako or ship safe chest with an original black lacquer finish. Ornate iron hardware decorates the front of the box with a side locking mechanism. Behind the front door are six drawers with ring pulls. Two of the drawers are precious and small, one labelled in kanji. Outside is made of Hinoki wood (Cypress) while the inside drawers are made of Kiri wood (Paulownia). Dates from the Edo age 19th century. Size: 15" height, 17" depth, 13" width

Light brown clay underlying rich earthy tones, this Irabo chawan has an attractive shape and slender textured pedestal. Rough yet elegant, it feels comfortable in the hand.

Introduced to Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries from the Korean Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), Irabo bowls are admired largely for their use in tea ceremony. Made of coarse, unrefined clay with a high content of iron oxide, such bowls display remarkable contrast and depth...

An unusual lacquered flower vase, hanaike, by the eminent bamboo artist Tanabe Chikuunsai II ( 1919~2000 ). The black lacquered bamboo vase is decorated in vermillion lacquer with a sago palm and is also signed. The vase is complete with its original blue cotton bag and a signed and inscribed box.

Chikuunsai I began the family tradition of making fine bamboo crafts in 1890, it still flourishes today under the direction of Tanabe Chikuunsai III.

A rarely encountered occupation era original Japanese shin hanga woodblock print titled "Tanigumi Temple, Mino" by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) dated in the lower left margin Showa 22 (1947). The artist's black ink signature and red seal are at the lower left corner of the image. The 6mm circular seal of the publisher Watanabe (used 1946-1957) is at the lower right corner. Antique Japanese cha tansu (tea storage cabinet) made with a gorgeous lacquered hinoki (Japanese cypress) frame, and persimmon wood front panels. It has an open display shelving area with a branch accent, original glass panels, iron hirute handles, and plenty of storage space. Born in Kyoto in 1921, Morikazu Kimura took up the family tradition of potting from a very young age and spent much of his time researching and perfecting the Tenmoku style. In 1947 at the age of 26 he set up his own kiln in the exclusive potting district of Gojo-zaka and achieved much success...

Antique Japanese Maneki-neko, Meiji 1868-1912. The Maneki-neko is a beckoning cat often seen at the entrance of a shop or other business and thought to be auspicious. Hand formed with Ceramic in good overall condition. It measures 11" wide at base 16" tall.
