Antique Japanese print depicting the founder of the Shingon or "True Word" school of Buddhism, Kūkai (774-835). He was a famous calligrapher and engineer who invented the kana, syllabic Japanese scripts used in the Japanese writing system. In his hands he holds a vajra, a ritualistic weapon representing firmness of spirit and spiritual power, and prayer beads...

Beautiful, original woodblock print by ukiyo-e woodblock artist Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III (1786–1864). It is #22 in a series called Sono sugata Yukari no usushi-e, or "Stories of Reincarnated Beings". In the center of the print there is a young child, hunched forward as he eagerly listens to stories from an adult woman in a pink kimono with blue and grey sleeves, with a sheathed sword across her lap. A bowl of treats and a black lamp with flowers sits between them...

Oversized Japanese "sosaku hanga" woodblock print by Jun'ichiro Sekino (1914-1988) titled "Boy and His Cat." dated 1957. The artist's white ink signature and red seal are at the lower right corner of the image. The edition number 51/100 and the date are in pencil at the left side of the bottom margin. The right side of the bottom margin holds "Jun Sekino" in black ink. Image size: 24 1/2" x 12 3/8" plus full margins. The framed size is about 36 1/2" x 24 3/4." Very good overall condition...

Oversized limited-edition Japanese "sosaku hanga" woodblock print by Tamami Shima (1937-1999) titled "April Forest." The bottom margin is pencil-signed, titled in kanji, dated 1962, and numbered 67/100. Paper: 22"V x 15 7/8"H (image: 19 7/8"V x 13 3/4"H). Very good overall condition. April Forest is written in pen verso (see enlargement 5). From a Scottsdale, AZ estate. Originally purchased from M. M. Shinno & Associates in Los Angeles.

Antique Japanese triptych woodblock print, meaning it is comprised of three separate sheets, depicting Akechi Mitsuhide in the final battle of Yamazaki in 1582. He is shown seated upon his horse, which has been shot dead with arrows, clutching his sword and gazing over the river at the approaching enemy forces in the distance. Four of his own soldiers are seen scattered around, either dead or dying, soaked in blood, suffering traumatic injury...

Large Japanese woodblock print by renowned artist Hideo Hagiwara (1913-2007). Studied at the Tokyo school of Fine Arts, where he graduated at the Oil Painting Section in 1938. While still there he attended Un'ichi Hiratsuka's extracurricular woodblock printing course, and in the same year he became quality controller at the Takamizawa Woodblock Print Company. He was conscripted into the army in 1943. In 1945 he had lost his house, his atelier and nearly all his early works...

Japanese limited-edition abstract sosaku hanga woodblock print by Hideo Hagiwara (1913-2007) titled "Bird." The print is pencil-signed, dated '58, and numbered 5/30 on the bottom margin. This print is an example of a reverse printed image on fine, transparent, slightly crinkled paper that is characteristic of his early work. There is an old inventory number (586A) at lower edge verso. Image size: 10 3/4"V x 14 3/4"H (paper: 13"V x 17"H). Very good overall condition...

Rare limited-edition abstract Japanese sosaku hanga woodblock print by Jun'ichiro Sekino (1914-1988) believed to be dated circa late 1950s. The bottom margin is pencil-signed and numbered 2/50. A white ink Jun Sekino signature is at the lower right. Paper: 12 1/8"V x 24 7/8"H (image: 9 3/8"V x 22 1/8"H). There is a mat burn line and some soiling evident in the margins. There are remnants of brown tape at the top verso. An original price tag is on the back...

Ukiyo-e style images of fierce warriors and a demon appear in the two front paper blocks, and have kanji that has been cut from the tops. A beautiful maiden appears in the third block, while a large wave appears in the last, a nod to the famous woodblock artist Hokusai...
