A Japanese, Ryukyuan type, lacquer charger. Inlaid mother of pearl decoration of figures in landscape on black lacquer in the center surrounded by red lacquer. A band of black lacquer also exposed just inside the rim - also with mother of pearl inlay. The egde of the charger rubbed for that prized negoro affect of exposing the black lacquer background through an invariably worn coat of red lacquer...

Wonderful Japanese antique tetsubin (tea pot), made of cast iron with concentric ripples across the body. The handle is beautifully shaped. It has the bronze lid which is also signed, and a flower bud serves as the lid's handle. The signature reads: Ryubundo zo, translation: Created by Ryubundo. Age: Meiji Period. A simple yet refined bamboo sago or a scoop used to gather tea leaves from the tea jar. The top contains a carving of scholar rocks set among small bamboo and a small tree with slight foliage. The inscription on the top right, (Japanese: Gakusoka, Chinese: Xuesu jia) refers to a person who upholds or revives knowledge or education. Black Raku Chawan with wood box, both have the sign of the 12th. Kichizaemon Konyu ( 1857-1932 ).

The lid back of the wood box bares the appraisal and of Sen Sosa XII 'Sesai' ( 1863 - 1937 ), who has been the 12th grand tea master of Omotesenke.

We offer this tea bowl by order of a German collector.

The chawan is in good condition with no repairs...

Chawan in Raku style, made in dry lacquer technique (kanshitsu) simulating ceramic. The lacquer is applied in such a way that you see small crevices and patches of red and brownish black lacquer in the same way we see it in Raku ware. Japan, Meiji era.

Rare blue sharkskin porcelain tea caddy with a bird, flowers, and butterflies. The bird and butterflies are glossy and do not have the sharkskin texture giving this piece a beautiful contrast which was not an easy feat for the artist to achieve. The blue background graduates from light at the bottom to darker shade of light blue at the top. Signed and in excellent condition, it measures 6 inches tall with lid on.

Extraordinary and more than one hundred year old water jar Mizusashi. It is signed by an unknown artist on the bottom.

This Bizen ware Mizusashi has a breathtaking shape and very good yellowish natural glaze called Goma. Great!

Mizusashi are containers of fresh water for replenishing the pot and rinsing bowls in the tea ceremony.

It has a great atmosphere with aestetic ume tsubomi (plum tree) design. Good condition with some expected rust. Signed Ryobundo on the outside.

This chawan was made by the 8th generation Ohi Chozaemon (1851-1927) based in Kanazawa and is done in a style known as “ameyu” or candy glazing. The glazing is a wonderful example of ameyu and, in fact, approximates the color of a caramel candied-apple. The interesting color scheme and glossy sheen make it an attractive backdrop for a frothy bowl of dark green matcha. While some tea bowls may look best in the confines of a dimly lit tea room, this bowl looks much better in bright light...
