From the front, it represents a richly harnessed horse with a ceremonial saddle, prancing. On the other side, it is the entrance to a pavilion or a temple under pine trees. Lovely details. A fine shoe-shaped - katsugata tea bowl of black Oribe (oribe-kuro chawan), the coarse Mino clay is covered with a thick black glaze, on one side a cartouches featuring irregular strips patterns in iron-brown glaze on creamy ground. Japan, Edo, Meiji period, 19th cent. L 13.5 cm, H 6.5 cm. Condition: Excellent with signs of use and wear.

A delicate kiri-wood tray decorated with a fledgling among grass puffed up against the cold by important 20th century artist Domoto Insho enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kosuzume Seifu (Small Sparrow, Pure Wind) and signed inside Insho Saku. It is 19 x 19 x 2.5 cm (7-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 1 inch) and is in excellent condition.

An amazing japanese table composed of two beautifully decorated shelves. The upper shelf depicts a waterfall, high waves and pine trees in gold and brown takamaki-e, hirakami-e lacquer and kirigane on a base of nashi-ji. It lies on two openwork side panels.
The lower shelf is more sparsely decorated but still finely executed. It depicts a cottage surrounded by hills and trees in gold and brown takamaki-e and hiramaki-e lacquer, kirigane and nashi-ji...

Edo Period (1603-1868) Mishima calendar (Koyomide) tea bowl (三島暦手茶碗) with Ogata Kenzan mark.

Mishima pottery is a slip inlay technique brought to Japan from Korea in the 16th century.

In the city of Mishima there is a Grand Shrine of Mishima that was famous for publishing an almanac/calendar with bars for describing each day with its good and bad luck connotations.

The Koyomide bowls seemed to mimic these almanacs...

This is a rare antique Mizusashi (water jar) of Japanese Ofukei ware covered with black lacquer lid decorated with wisteria entwined with pine trees which was made in 18-19 centuries during Edo period (1603-1868)...

Born the second son of Ryônyû, the 10th Raku Kichizaemon Tannyû took over the family kiln in 1811 at the age of 16 and served until his retirement and subsequent handing on of the title of Kichizaemon to his son-in-law Keinyû some 34 years later. Retaining many of the unique stylistic innovations of his father including his clay trimming technique, Tannyû went on to establish several new family kilns and to produce wares for both 10th and 11th Tokugawa Lords...

Aka Raku Chawan named "Hanshan" made by Matsuo Fushunsai (1792-1830) who was the 5th generation head of Matsuo-Ryu Tea Ceremony School in Higashi-ku , Nagoya.
The box is signed by Matsuo 6th generation Iemoto Gyosai (1820-1856).

The rim is gently undulated moving to the plump body...

Kuro Hirosawa (1772-1840) Shino ware Chawan for tea ceremony with appraisal box. The name "Kuro" is carved near the foot ring.

Kuro Hirosawa was a samurai of Nagoya clan and a potter in the late Edo period. He enjoyed the tea ceremony and made tea utensils of Ko-Seto, Shino, Karatsu style in his free time. His works have a unique appearance and often called Kuro ware.
