A Japanese, Ryukyuan type, lacquer charger. Inlaid mother of pearl decoration of figures in landscape on black lacquer in the center surrounded by red lacquer. A band of black lacquer also exposed just inside the rim - also with mother of pearl inlay. The egde of the charger rubbed for that prized negoro affect of exposing the black lacquer background through an invariably worn coat of red lacquer...

An antique oke-bound wooden bucket has been lacquered mirror smooth black inside with a natural bark handle added to create a superb sumi-tori charcoal basket for use in the Japanese tea ceremony. The original cask-like body is worn at the rim to an incredible degree, and yet remains structurally sound. It may have indeed been a lacquer-workers bucket, or perhaps used by a paper-hanger, decades of being bumped by the brush naturally wearing down the edges...

Very old Japanese large size red negoro lacquer wood tray for tea ceremony. It dates from the late Edo / early Meiji Period approx. 150 years ago.

Condition is excellent with some wears due to age. This carved oval wood tray is an authentic item of old Japanese tea ceremony culture.

Chawan in Raku style, made in dry lacquer technique (kanshitsu) simulating ceramic. The lacquer is applied in such a way that you see small crevices and patches of red and brownish black lacquer in the same way we see it in Raku ware. Japan, Meiji era.

Set of nine lovely Antique Japanese lacquered wood trays. All trays are matching, with carved woven design. Color is a rich brown with a gold flower in center of trays. Bottom of tray is black lacquer, with four rounded wood pegs. Trays come with wooden box. Tai Sho Period (circa 1920) Dimensions: 9.25" X 9.5"

The Hiramaki-e technique, which dates from the latter part of the Heian Period (794-1185), was preceded by Togidashi maki-e, a technique in which not only the design, but the whole surface is covered with clear lacquer after the sprinkling of metal powder. The lacquer is then polished down to reveal the design.
