Very beautifully sculpted in the mass of bamboo, the decoration in gold lacquer and polychrome represents 2 Tengu (Japanese legendary creature or demon) under a pine pointing with a finger a vajra (ritual Hindu and Buddhist object, representation of the lightning and the indestructibility...). An antique oke-bound wooden bucket has been lacquered mirror smooth black inside with a natural bark handle added to create a superb sumi-tori charcoal basket for use in the Japanese tea ceremony. The original cask-like body is worn at the rim to an incredible degree, and yet remains structurally sound. It may have indeed been a lacquer-workers bucket, or perhaps used by a paper-hanger, decades of being bumped by the brush naturally wearing down the edges...

Japanese incense box in the form of a flattened drum with realistic wood grain pattern in gold flake togidashi maki-e lacquer and high relief lacquer to resemble iron studs along the sides. The top of the box is done in low-relief maki-e gold lacquer with the image of a mother hen and father rooster pecking for food with their three infant chicks. An amazing japanese table composed of two beautifully decorated shelves. The upper shelf depicts a waterfall, high waves and pine trees in gold and brown takamaki-e, hirakami-e lacquer and kirigane on a base of nashi-ji. It lies on two openwork side panels.
The lower shelf is more sparsely decorated but still finely executed. It depicts a cottage surrounded by hills and trees in gold and brown takamaki-e and hiramaki-e lacquer, kirigane and nashi-ji...

Up for sale is this magnificent and high class set of a tea pot and a tea container made of wood and covered in lacquer with elaborate maki-e, applied with gold designs. Both pieces of art have perfectly fitting maki-e wooden stands. This set was made at the end of the 19th century.
