A pair of antique Japanese folding keyaki doors with iron mounts. The door is constructed with mortise and tenon joints. The panels are divided into 7 parts framed with carved decoration and hinged with iron mounts. The carved decoration is finely painted with polychrome mineral pigment with gold gilt accents. The subject matter of the temple doors is a scrolling lotus motif and 8 phoenixes.

This large and expressive sculpture is made, as expected, from joined segments, each separately carved. This technique is a diagnostic "telltale" which helps to date the piece. The figure sits in a devotional posture, leaning slightly forward with hands joined in a gesture of worship. Extensive remains of gesso and pigment. A Japanese ranma (transom) with a Hinoki (Cypress) frame and a Kusunoki (Camphor) wood hand carved Chiku Bai theme in highly detailed three dimensional relief. Artist signed Tosho Nakajima. Most likely mounted in a wealthy Japanese home or a fancy Ryokan (country inn). Its main theme is a majestic Plum Blossom tree (Bai) accented with Bamboo (Chiku).

The ranma was often mounted above the Fusuma sliding doors between rooms to allow the air to circulate freely...

Antique Japanese natural burl wood low stand or pedestal. Stunning original warm lacquer lighter tones with darker touches of brown and black. Shapely form as the burl sways right then drifts upward and to the left as it flattens out onto a perfect surface.
Would make for an excellent side table for a contemporary home.

Japanese hand split bamboo basket with high slender sides rising from a square base to a round lip. Bamboo intertwined into a handle fashioned with small split bamboo. Cheveron pattern is seen repeating on all sides with a squad symmetrical pattern seen on the base.
