Pastel rooftops march among the green foliage on this iconic mid-century painting by Miwa Chosei in the original frame bearing the artists “Tomo Seal” on back and in a box from Takashimaya Department Store dating from the 1950s titled Ieshima no Ienami (Rows of houses on Ieshima). A similar work was exhibited at the 11th Nitten. Pigment on silk it is in fine condition. The painting is 22 x 23 inches (56 x 58.5 cm). The frame is 30 x 28 x 2 inches (76 x 71 x 5 cm)...

Stunning Antique Japanese ema or wooden plaque on which Shinto worshippers would write their prayers and wishes to be received by deities or spirits. Hand painted with three bannered ships coming to shore amidst rough, rolling waves. Pine trees poke in from the bottom and leftmost side with gold flakes accenting the horizon. Very well done and in original condition. Signed "Ensai Fujiwara Masatoshi" , dated "Keio Gannen" or "first year of Keio" (September 1865). Size: 26" H x 60" W

Pines in the Rimpa style grow on the folded surface of this fan painted by Kamisaka Sekka and enclosed in the original signed wooden box, retaining the original paper binding on the fan itself. It is 12 inches (30 cm) long folded, and in excellent condition.
Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) is the godfather of 20th century Japanese design and the Rimpa revival. He was born in Kyoto in 1866, one of six siblings...

An oil on canvas by Ono Sue titled “Inaka no Kyokai, Paris” or Rustic Church in Paris set into a double wood frame. The canvas is 15-1/2 x 18 inches (40 x 45 cm), the frame 24 x 27 inches (61 x 69 cm) and all is in excellent condition.
Ono Sue (1910-1985) was born in Niigata prefecture, and after serving as a school teacher for one year, moved to Kyoto in 1934 to pursue a career in oil painting under Yasui Sotaro...

A long “Hengaku” framed painting meant to sit above the transom by Yoshimura Horyu featuring monkeys riding on the back of a deer. One has fallen and is being dragged along like a water-skier by vines tangled in the deers horns. A very humorous scene by this rare Osaka artist. Pigment and ink on silk mounted on gold with a carved rosewood frame. The frame is 154.5 x 50 cm (61 x 20 inches) and is in fine condition, with toning to the silk typical of age...

Sitting demurely, legs folded with her back to the viewer, an oil painting by Yoshii Kosaburo dated 1937 and encased in the original period wooden frame. Oil on canvas, the painting is 15 x 18 inches (38 x 46 cm), the frame 21 x 23-1/2 inches (53 x 60 cm) and is in fine condition. The frame has marks and wear typical of age. Four kiri panels are set into a rosewood framework, each uniquely painted by Osaka Literati paragon Mori Kinseki. It is 12 x 12 x 11-1/2 inches (30 x 30 x 29 cm) and is in fine condition. The brass insert too, looks almost unused. Included is a small folding fan in the original box by the artist as well. Mori Kinseki (1843-1921) was born the third son in a family of Inn owners in the hotsprings town of Arima, Hyogo prefecture, in 1843...

They are made for an opening 141.5 x 180 cm (55-3/4 x 71 inches). They are in overall fine condition. These were acquired from a large estate along the Kamiyagawa River in Kyoto’s posh Kinugasa district...

Urushi-e is a style of Japanese art in which colored lacquers are used, along with mica and metal elements as accents. This piece depicts Mount Fuji, raised against a deep blue background, with etched rock formations in bright gold and orange lacquer at its peak, fading to brown lacquer with silver mica-powder mists floating around it...
