An unusual cubic work by Hashimoto Tomonari in which he has altered his normal process to allow a powerful crusted texture to form on the work. Oxidized in shades of blue and rusty orange. Very pretty Satsuma earthenware bowl, round in shape, decorated with gold and polychrome enamels, representing inside the bowl, courtesans and children, in a garden, under maple trees, and near a lake. The kimonos are sumptuous by the thickness of gold used and the finesse of the details. The perimeter represents a meeting of samurai and on the other side courtesans under cherry blossoms. This is a beautiful early Japanese satsuma vase. It is made in the style and quality of mercury/gold fired Meizan pieces, except it stands 18 inches tall. It also features a basket weave design and extensive enamel work. It's unsigned and a very heavy piece. The bottom edge is rough so a stand or protection will be needed to keep it from scratching surfaces. This rare piece belongs in a museum.

Very refined earthenware vase, from the Satsuma kilns, with polychrome enamels, presents a decoration of courtesans (bijin) and a child under a flowering tree with on one side, in the background, a cottage at the foot of a hill. At the base of the collar, the shoulder is covered with chrysanthemum flowers. A barely legible mark under the base in a red lacquer cartouche, partly covered by a collector's label, could be attributed to Fujan (?). Height: 15 cm. Period: Meiji (1868-1912) 19/20th.
