A large Indian hand-carved wooden mask of Ganesh, the Hindu elephant headed deity known to be the remover of obstacles. His trunk raised high above its head, with gold pigment eyes staring intensely out from either side of the trunk. His human like mouth gapes open with the tongue sticking out, and the ears carved with an earring on one side. The mask is carved wearing a crown resembling lotus petals. Original polychrome pigments shown in red, blue, and gold...

Gandhara Kingdom stucco head of Buddha mounted, 3/4th Century, condition: good, left ear damaged and a few inconsequential nicks, common considering the age of this fine sculpture, size" H. 12cm x W. 8cm x D. 11cm. The idealized style is reminiscent of Greek Hellenistic sculpture which strongly influenced the Buddhist imagery of Central Asia and in particular of Gandharan artists.

Very interesting Indian Miniature Painting of a popular subject, Baz Bahadur and Rupmati, the last king of Malwa and his HIndu courtesan (r.1555-61) before its absorption into the Moghul empire,here the lovers are hunting at night, depicted as a green-gowned woman holding lantern spotlighting group of deer with the king as an archer having just used his bow standing behind her...

From our Indian Subcontinent Collection, a fine 19th century brass surahi (water flask) paired with a large Kashmiri flashed-silver over lacquered-brass undertray, also 19th century. These two pieces were not originally part of a formal set, but we find that they make for an attractive and logical pairing. A large bronze image, cast in two pieces, showing the Tamil deity Aiyanar riding on his horse. The bejewelled cavalier is holding a curved sword and a round shield, wearing decorated bloomers. Antique Indian Mughal album leaf miniature painting most likely of the Emperor Jahangir on horseback. A halo and bejeweled crown imply his Imperial rank. Jahangir was ambitious about taking over the reign of his father, Akbar the Great, and the two were at odds until reconciling later in life. Akbar was a patron of the arts and it was he who brought together the Indian and Persian artists who defined the genre of Mughal miniature painting...

An antique Indian miniature panting of harem musicians. Three beauties sit on an ornately decorated carpet and pillows. Two of them play instruments while a third claps in time. Around them is a lush garden with birds and a fountain. In the background, a marble pavilion stands with an ornate red and gold canopy. Wealthy residences had a protected area where all the women of the house lived. This scene takes place in the antahpur (inner courtyard) of such an area...
