GBP £320 Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang (c. 2300 - 2000 BC)
This twin-handled pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It is quite thin-walled and relatively highly-fired. The upper body has been coated in a reddish-brown wash on top of which have been painted geometric patterns in a dark fired-on mineral-based pigment... Chinese late Tang dynasty to Five Dynasties period stoneware ewer with high shoulder tapering down to a slightly flared foot and flat base, the short neck ending in a slightly wider rolled mouth. A double-strand handle connects to the neck and shoulder, and a short straight spout is opposite the handle. The ewer is covered overall in a thin layer of white slip with a wavy ribbon or rope motif that ends well above the unglazed base. 7 1/2" high...
