A wood brush pot was in nice form.
It was well preserved despite the bottom cover was lost and was replaced by an old plank of wood.
The surface was in kind of dry-feel and in pale tint. But I believe it can be transformed easily by rubbing with wood wax and changed to a beautifulcolor.

A rare and beautiful, flattened form bamboo box with cover, probably used as a seal paste or brush washer. It is carved out from the root part of bamboo and nicely polished. Inside the lid a compass (no longer functioning). Qing, 18–19th cent. H 3 cm, D 7,5 cm. Condition: Over-all fine, and really good, old patina, but with small chip to lid.

Republic Period

Antique Chinese calligraphy brush from the 19th century. The handle is made of bone, highly polished, with an incised inscription. A fine red ribbon is the hanger. The bristles are white horse hair. It measures 9.5" long.

A simple one line Chinese calligraphy attributing to Chi Xizhao (1793-1866). The calligraphy reads: The pure jade harmonizing with the gold with the pure wind in the forest of treasure. The work is dated to year of the water boar (approximately 1863), mid spring. Chi Xizhao was a noted Qing Period poet. Chi Xizhao was a scholar of the xueshi rank during the Jiaqing period. This scroll originally was one of a pair.

A Chinese signed calligraphy poem on paper from the Republic period. This scroll is from the collection of the Hollywood actor James Coburn. The poem was written during the New Year of 1917. It expresses the budding of spring, possibly in relation to Sun Yat Sen, alluding to the beginning of the Republic of China. There are two red seals on the scroll. The image measures: 23.5" wide by 50" long.

DESCRIPTION: An attractive scholar's calligraphy brush, crafted using long brown horsehair bristles attached to a bulbous ox-horn ferrule and segmented, solid ox- horn shaft. A very handsome brush in good condition from the latter Qing Dynasty, which would have been used for calligraphy or painting. DIMENSIONS: 14” long (35.5 cm).

The calligraphy reads as an auspicious poem where the poet is using the flow of water in relation to the spread and development of the family with generation after generation of children. Chinese calligraphy brush pot, all hand-carved from bamboo. The low relief carvings depict a group of scholars riding in a boat through a rocky landscape scene with hanging pine branches. The rendering is similar to ink painting. Has subtle silver inlay in the river.

The main side showing figures in a garden setting, the backside with two animal cartouches and a poem in Chinese characters, as well delicately engraved in French and romanized Chinese. Condition: the base reinforced with leather, some tears and cracks and tiny losses, rim with flee bites. Dimension: height: c. 15.5, diameter: 11.1 cm.
