Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Soldier Figure

This pottery figure was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is "heavily-potted" and made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a creamy-white pigment. It represents a warrior wearing armoured clothing and a hooded cloak.

It is of a good size with a height of 30 cm (12 inches). There is surface wear and loss of pigment but there is no sign of any restoration or repair.

A cylinder has been removed from this cylindrical vase, quite a striking shape by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Ohen Ichirin Hanaire. Important and rare mask carved in wood fungus, of the tinder fungus type (fomes fomentarius), of rounded triangular form, with perforated oval eyes, incised mouth and nose in relief, probably added. Netsuké representing a squirrel, perhaps a dormouse. The little animal is carved from a boar's tooth. He has just been surprised and stands on his hind legs momentarily abandoning the vegetable (eggplant?) he was nibbling. Its inset eyes were carved from a shiny black material, probably horn.
