The artist has represented a standing character, leaning on a broom, with a blissful and amused expression on his face turned towards the sky. This is probably Shih Te, a mischievous young Chinese monk who, according to legend, lived in the Kwo-Ching-Su temple in China during the Tang period around the 9th century. The nine-dragon design on this charger is after a Xuande prototype, where dishes were painted with a side-facing five-clawed dragon amongst crashing waves in the centre, the cavetto decorated with four dragons hunting the golden ball. Condition: The plate has a restored area and one glaze hairline in the centre (see pictures). Measurement: Diameter 15.5 cm = 6.1 inch

Often zitan lacked excessive carving, due its natural beauty which never required a coat of lacquer. Chinese antique box, carved of a beautiful golden hardwood, very heavy. Small cabinet doors open to a compartment with a small open area in the center and two rows of 3 drawers each on either side. It is carved on all sides with scrolling vines and bats. The front is minutely carved and has inlay of green and very pale green and white jade including more little bats.
