Circa 1980, Philippines woven reed and bamboo storage basket crafted by the Ifugao people of the Luzon Cordillera range in the Philippines. Known for their craftsmanship in basketry both Ifugao men and women engage in basket making. Created for everyday use, head baskets like this were used in the fields to collect rice or sweet potatoes and then to store, keeping perishables dry. In excellent condition, it measures 13.5" square by 6" high.

Very old betel nut crusher, complete with its sheath. The handle is finely decorated with an elaborate bone sculpture of a bird with the head of an old man, perched on what seems to be foliage. Beautiful age patina. The base of the handle is made of bronze, and the blade is made of iron. The sheath is made of wood. Indonesia, Bali Island, 19th century. Height of the crusher: 23 cm. Old Timorese wooden statue commemorating a departed loved one. These were kept in the “attic” of a home and were not meant to be free standing. I bought this from an old Australian collection which was collected in the 1980s in West Timor, so this dates 1950’s to 1960s. This carved from hard wood in good condition with minor checks in the wood. H: 19.5cm/7.8in.

Two etched bamboo section containers- these were used to hold cotton tufts and spindles- worn at a woman’s waist during the making of textiles. Beautifully carved with geometric designs and one has a strand Jacob’s Tears beads. Circa 1960 to 1970. Good pieces acquired about 20 years ago, cannot be found anymore. Magnificent all rattan hand woven Rawang “san phi” basket, from the remote Putao area in Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. This one is quite old circa 50- 70 years, in good condition (one repaired loop), still pliable and not brittle, with excellent natural patina. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Arts of Asia 2007: Vol 37, #3, by Michael Howard has a good article on Rawang crafts...

A gunpowder horn dating to the 19th / early 20th century. The curved body is made from water buffalo horn, the wide end with a wooden stopper, the suspension area with a Singha head and a bronze chain. The gunpowder was stored in the Batak house in large gourds, the chief carried his own personal supply in such containers, which he wore suspended from a chain around his neck.
