rare antique large Thai “parang”, used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc. to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps. The handle is made of old, and nowadays rare, Thai Rosewood: Dalbergia cochinchinensis. The the hand forged blade still has a usable sharp cutting. There are a couple of splitsin the handle which is secured by a metal band, please see enlargements. L: 64cm/25.2in.

One of a kind, rare ceremonial rice cutter from the Karen people (this particular one is from Northern Thailand). This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp.Circa 60 to 100 years old...

Good bamboo handled knife from the Karen ethnic group Northern Thai/Burma border. Fine example of village craftsmanship, all these parts were handmade, even the blades. The bamboo handle is classic and fits comfortably in the hand. Total length 31cm/12in with sharp edge- small nick at the tip off the blade which could be honed out, about 60 years old.

The scabbard (taguban) is carved of wood, wrapped with rattan and has shell inlay in elaborate Islamic filigree. From the predominately Islamic Sulu Islands of Southern Philippines.

Large vintage “bush knife” from Lanna Thailand, this is an all purpose tool with a thick spine and very sharp edge- quite heavy as well. The blade is fixed with a steel collar and woven rattan and comes with a bamboo basket type sheath. Total L: 54cm/22.2in (blade L: 29cm/11.5in and handle L: 25cm/10.5in). This is an artisanal village made piece and not mass produced.
