'Flower cards' as traditional Japanese card game) that is locked for wishing to quit gambling, once dedicated to Hozanji shrine in Nara prefecture, Japan. Hand painted image of an old pine tree, bamboo and plum blossom tree (known as Sho Chiku Bai-the 3 felicitous friends of winter) with Chrysanthemums, rock boulders and snow blanketing the scene. Artist seal on the left panel. Serene winter scene full of visual movement and energy. Painted on Gofun paper in Sumi and Rinpa paint with gold flex.

In the foreground, lotus plants and peonies emerge from leaves and stems of grass that bend gently in the wind, while reeds and tufts of susuki grass complete the composition. Signed lower right. Period: Taisho ca. 1920-1930 Dimensions: 183 x 206 cm. Condition: Excellent. There is slight wear between the joints of the two panels and on the wooden frame.
