Sold Japanese 19thC carved netsuke depicting a fox holding a drum, a motif related to a character from the Kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon-Zakura. In this play, a fox takes on human form to serve the military leader Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The fox's parents were killed for their pelts, which were used to make the drum. The fox, Tadanobu, is drawn to the drum because it is made from the skin of its parents.

Sold The dark wood netsuke depicts a grinning boy pulling down his eye lid in a teasing gesture in a game of “bekkako”. His left arm behind his back holds a mask of a fox.
Typical for Miwa, eyes are double inlayed from the inside. In addition, teeth are also inlayed with some lighter material.
