The metal head of the rattle – called shakujo – with some simply engraved decoration on the central shaft indicating lotus petals. The central ring has the shape of an inverted heart, from which six rings loop, three on each side.
The six rings symbolize the Six Realms of Existence where Jizō is active and the Six Perfections that lead to nirvana: generosity, morality, patience, vigor, concentration, and wisdom.

An antique Japanese bronze vase called Kabin designed with a 3 claw dragon hugging the shoulder and neck. The lower part of the vase is surrounded by waves of water. Standing on 4 legs each portrayed and protected by a mythical beast. Fine metal detailing to the head and body of the dragon.

Antique Japanese pair of bronze warrior attendant figures. Dressed in Chinese armor and holding tall poles. Their tight curls suggest the mains of fu-dogs. Made of bronze with mixed metal details. The figures stand on square, footed platforms. Intricately sculpted with great movement and expression.

Japanese Meiji period coppery bronze hibachi or hand warmer decorated in high relief with two opposing panels, one featuring scholars in a pine grove and a second with an old man and child under cherry trees. Lion head relief handles at the two sides. With hot coals inside, this type of hibachi was designed to heat a small area in a home. Circa 1900. 7" high x 7 1/4" diameter. Weighs 5 lbs. Very good overall condition with a nice patina.

During the Kamakura period in Japan (1185-1333), a remarkable form of Buddhist sculpture known as the votive Buddha emerged. Commonly referred to as kakebotoke (hanging Buddhas), pieces like this would have been mounted on spherical plaques made of bronze or copper and hung in a Buddhist temple or possibly even in a Shinto shrine. An exquisite bronze image of an ancient sage, a gnarled staff supporting his crooked frame with a golden fan capped with silver feathers clutched in his right hand. The Detail is superb, from the evocative expression to the minute details on his robe and accoutrements. It is signed on the foot Seiun (Hara Souemon), a top quality bronze, expressive and detailed. The figure is 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition...

A sage, strikes a forever pose as he stares into the distance, robes billowing in the wind, contemplating the troubles of lesser beings, a fan clutched behind. This is a beautiful bronze sculpture dating from early 20th century Japan paying homage to the literati and Confucian traditions which formed the basis of Japanese ideology at the time. It is signed Kiyoshi with an engraved signature on the hem of his robes. The figure stands 39 cm (15-1/2 inches) tall and is in excellent condition...
