Rare pair of animals mat weights carved in soft white stone circa Han Dynasty or earlier. Quite unusual, I have never seen anything like these before. They have been repaired, see enlargements for scale. These have good water absorption as well as a string petrichor- what makes me think these are a stone is that they are actually softer than pottery of the period.

Chinese antique very tall standing Buddha carved of stone. Buddha's right hand is raised in Abhayamudra (have no fear) and the left in Varadamudra (generosity and compassion). The drapery of his dhoti is carved in the manner of T'ang figures. Beautiful facial features give the commanding presence of the statue a sense of serenity and calm. Traces of polychrome pigment. A masterfully well-carved solid jade figure of a seated man, possibly Lao-Tze. The brownish "skin" of the stone has been skillfully worked into the figure's beard, the work of an especially talented artist who was able to isolate the skin and incorporate it only in the figure's beard. Budai is the Chinese "Père Noël" ,the Japanese calls him Hoteï. He carries toys in a big bag and distributes them to children who adore him and are sometimes represented at his side. The god is seated, his half-open robe reveals his large belly, a symbol of his generosity. He holds his rosary in his hand. Oddly enough his big bag is missing. It is sculpted from a beige steatite ( soap stone) stained with pink, on the skull appear red veins of the stone...

An authentic marble stele fragment depicting an Apsara, measuring 4-3/4" in height by 3-1/2" in width. The carving is very well done and the details are crisp. The surface retains its original patina. A very fine example, mounted on a custom stand (the base of the sculpture has been drilled with a hole to accommodate the shaft). This is a diminutive portrayal of a crowned Buddhist figure, most likely a Bodhisattva, dating to circa the 6th century AD, Northern Qi dynasty. Note that the nose and areas of the forehead are darker than the rest of the stone, indicating that they have been rubbed by the hands of worshippers over the centuries, creating a "sweat stain" darkening of the stone...

This Pindola is the leader of the 18 Arhats and his long eyebrows represent longevity, seniority and leadership. The work is finely executed and the style of the carving is unusual, cartoonish. In addition, the artist allowed himself to cheat by abnormally moving the left ear too close to the eye so that, seen from the front, the face is balanced.
