A Chinese female headdress formed by an ornate pierced and repousse partially gilt metal body. Decorated with phoenixes and blossoms embellished with remnants of king fisher feathers, pearls, pompoms, framed green glass and mirror pieces. Condition: feathers quite completely lost, losses, loose paper lining, needs a refreshment. Dimension: height c. 18.5 cm, width c. 27 cm, c. 12 cm deep.

Fine and rare two paneled wedding blanket from the Bouyi, Buyi ethnic group in Changshun area Guizou, China. Woven from all handspun cotton thread. The blue and white center field has a “wanzi” swastika meander pattern while the upper and lower parts are the repetitive “well” symbols. This dates circa 1960’s. Without border- L 130cm/51in and W: 72cm/28in, with border- L: 176cm/69in and W: 114cm/28in. A stunning piece- almost has a Mark Rothko feeling to it.

Unusual white pottery impressed image of the Akshobhya Buddha, this an old piece and will guarantee it to be at least 100 years (probably much older). In his left hand he holds a vajra and his left is in the bhumiparsha mudra, behind him is detailed radiance and flanked at the base by two animals (probably elephants). This has traces of excavation as well as quick absorption of water and scent of petrichor- typical of old pottery. H: 5.4cm/2.1in and W: 4.3cm/1.8in.

Chinese late Qing to early Republic period lacquered leather official’s hat box with round base and conical cover painted overall in leafy polychrome flowers and gilt highlights set against a burgundy ground. The cover fully lifts off to reveal an interior covered in blue silk. The burgundy base has two oval openings at the center that appear to be designed to facilitate carrying with fingers or tying for transport. Old hand carved wooden ink pad box circa first half 20th century. I think this is probably a Yao item, but as I purchased it in a Bai ethnic minority market in Yunnan, over 20 years ago, we’ll assume it is Bai. This has a floral pattern carved on the lid. The ink has long ago dried up. Nice natural patina. L: 7.2cm/2.9in x W: 5.8cm/2.3in x H: 3.2cm/1.3in.

Very rare early 20th century textile from the Mulao ethnic group Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Province. Little is known about these textiles other than they show a close affinity with Maonan weavings and are no longer being woven by this people. This is a two paneled blanket with original border and supplementary weft silk and cotton embroidered pattern of birds, mythical animals and flowers on a cotton field “key fret” pattern...
