This twin-handled pottery jar was made around 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Neolithic Qijia Culture (c. 2050 - 1700 BC), from what is now eastern Gansu province, China. It is fairly "heavily-potted" and made from quite a high-fired grey pottery, having an almost "metallic ring" to it when tapped. It has a burnished surface that is smooth to the touch... The underside reveals the pinkish-beige clay and traces of the throwing process. The candlestick has a simple yet striking form. It exhibits numerous firing flaws, chips, and pieces of clay that have adhered. Chinese work from the Tang period, 8th-9th century. Height: 165 mm. No repairs.
