An unusual form by Mori Toshiaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Te-bachi (handled basin). The basin has been paired off at the top, the ribbons of clay looping over each other to form the winding handle. A most unusual design. A blast of ash decorates the exposed upper surfaces, the basin itself rust colored raw clay. It is 20 cm (8 inches) diameter, 14.5 cm (5-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this summer.

We are glad to present you this Edo period chawan by Japans greatest Poet Rengetsu Ōtagaki ( 1791-1875 ).

It shows a 31-syllable poem of herself and her signature tastefully carved onto the tea bowl. The poem says:

おともせず

ふるとも見えぬ

朝じめり

枝おもげ成

青柳のいと

Without a sound

rain falls, also unseen

the morning wetness

in heavily sagging

fronds of green ...

Rare yellow glazed Ido style bowl made by Raku Kichizaemon X Tannyu (1795-1854) with original box signed by the artist.

Tannyu was born as the second son of 9th-generation master Ryonyu. His father retired at the age of 56, and his elder brother had died young, so Tannyu became Raku master at the age of 17. He retired at the age of 51 and took on the name Tannyu, having been given the character 'tan' by Kyukosai, 10th-generation grand master of the Omotesenke school of tea.

Print entitled "Angeles Time" by Mayumi Oda depicting a baby angel sitting on top of a turnip or similar root vegetable. Little hands are clasped in prayer and an exuberance of leaves reaches upwards. "Angels live in the garden...you can call on them anytime!" - Mayumi Oda. This print is signed and titled in pencil. Japanese contemporary studio ware ceramic vase. Made with reddish clay and sculpted in a rounded triangular form with three large flat sides. Three curved triangular shoulders taper downward. Covered with a thick translucent white glaze with pleasing drips and crackles.

Antique hakama (trousers) worn by a Noh theatre actor. Decorated all over with a design of gold dragons and lattice work on a dark blue ground. Traditional squared form with pleating and wide white cotton ties. These hakama would have been part of the Noh theatre ôguchi (costume).

Antique Japanese small drum. Likely for ceremonial use, this drum could have been placed on a stand or held by its handle while in use. Made of keyaki (zelkova elm) wood and painted leather with iron and bronze.

Antique Japanese small Kutani ware figure of a sleeping cat. Made of porcelain and painted with golden spots. Wearing a colorful ribbon collar with yellow pompoms. Charming relaxed pose and intricate details especially on face. The bottom is left unglazed.

A small Chinese export porcelain foo dog done in the Sancai colors of brown, green, and yellow. The dog is standing on a pedestal with a puppy under his left foot. The figurine is marked "CHINA" on it's flat base. The dog measures about 7 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" wide. The condition is excellent with thickly applied enamels. The asking price includes free shipping within the USA.

Antique Japanese group of 3 bronze vases. The smallest is gourd shaped, the medium vase has an hourglass shape and the tallest vase has a long neck, a round base and a reddish finish.

This is beautiful Japanese Ko Imari Porcelain plate with Dragon and Ho-O bird design intricately painted in deep cobalt blue. There is also the clouds and Ho-ju design. There is marking on the back of plate. The condition of plate excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. One little spot on the rim has thin blue paint as showing on the photo. Japanese antique okimono of a group of 3 frogs. The younger frog sits on a larger frog's back while one frog is separate. Carved of sugi (cryptomeria) wood with reverse painted glass eyes.
Frogs are considered symbols of luck in Japanese culture and are used widely in poetry and art. The word for "frog" (kaeru) in Japanese also means "return" which is why small sculptures of frogs are sometimes carried by travelers as a way to make sure they return home safely from their journeys. <...

An antique Japanese Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Aka Matsu (Red Pine) woods. Beautiful original hand forged iron hardware and Urushi lacquer finish. Two full width drawers and sliding doors with horizontal slats that hide three small drawers on the right and a business books and records storage area on the left. Upper drawer features a lucky treasure bag lock plate with a stylized Mt Fuji lock plate below.

Antique Japanese bronze shokudai (candle stick for a Buddhist shrine) in the form of a crane standing on a turtle's back. In it's beak, the crane holds a lotus stem with blossoms, buds and unfurling leaves. The different aspects of a lotus symbolize the stages of the Buddha's life. The crane and turtle together symbolize longevity as well as the opposites of Heaven and Earth. This shokudai has especially intricate details.

Rare Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty Incised Pottery Jar

This very rare and unusual vessel was made during the latter part of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220) and most likely comes from the south central region of China. Noh theater mask, representing the character of Shintai, a youthful deity, with a rather soft expression. The mask is signed (see pictures). Painted wood, with metal eyes. Japan, Edo period early 19th century. Height: 21 cm. The mask is nicely mounted on a custom stand. Slight abrasion on the painting in some areas, otherwise very good condition.
