This is very cool and contemporary, a fattened sculptural vessel pierced with three platinum spikes erupting from the surface, shattering the barrier between functional form and Objet d’Art. First half of Edo period (1603-1868), Oita, Kyushu region, Japan, approx. H 53 x W 29 x D 20 cm (20.86 x 11.41 x 7.87in). Carved from a single wood (though with the insertion hands), with slight remains of original paint (so possibly it will comes off little more) and aged cracks (but it's stable and won't splits more). No major wormholes.

Large early Republic Chinese cloisonne lidded box on stand that could have graced a scholar’s desk. On each side is a 5 toed Imperial yellow dragon with the dragon on the lid chasing the flaming pearl of wisdom; all against a dark sky blue ground, the contrasting yellow stand really makes this piece stand out. The metal and wires are bronze gilt over copper. In excellent condition it measures 13.5" wide x 7" deep x 8.75" high
