Suzuki Shonen (1848-1918) was a Japanese painter from the Meiji(1868-1912) to Taisho periods(1912-1926). Born as Suzuki Hyakunen's eldest son, he learned painting from his father from an early age. Shonen became a teacher at the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School in 1898. He was good at portrait painting and received awards at national industrial exhibitions, etc.

A fine Chinese snuff bottle made from Carnelian, well hollowed. One side carved in relief with a bird on a rock beneath a bat, the backside engraved with a ruyi scepter. The stopper is made from white jadeit with a green spot and a bone spoon. Condition: the stopper eventually not original, traces of usage. Dimension: c. 6.2 cm high.

Early 20th Century rose quartz carving of 2 beauties. Made of one piece, it is difficult to find a double figure carving like this. Presented on a custom rosewood stand, this rose quartz carving has really nice details that we were not able to fully capture with a camera. It is much nicer in person and you won't be disappointed. In excellent condition, it measures on stand 10-1/2" high x 5" wide x 2". Carving alone measures 9-1/8" high.

Sculpture of a lifelike erected penis sitting on a base carved in the shape of two testicles, the bottom of which has been sculpted into a vagina. Either an erotic sculpture for fun or a votive phallus to be offered at a fertility shrine in the hopes of getting off-spring.

Chinese Qing dynasty rectangular form hardwood stand with four inward curving legs resting upon small balls. The stand is carved on the curved apron with vines and lingzhi fungus. Top: 17” long (about 18” at apron) x top: 10” wide (about 11 1/4" at apron) x 7” high. Weighs 6 lbs. 19th century. The stand was more recently refinished and is in very good overall condition. A few of the balls twist a bit but are secure. From a Sun City West, Arizona collection.

Wooden figure of a lion, companion to Fugen bosatsu. On his back he carries a lotus base, on which Fugen used to sit (figure missing). The lion stands on high and slightly stiff legs, each foot positioned on a small lotus base.

Antique Japanese figure of a Buddhist guardian, possibly Fudo Myoo, the Immovable One, the protector of Buddhism and true Buddhists. His stature, his curls, and his intense eyes are all traditional characteristics of Fudo Myoo. His red coloring is reminiscent of a Nio guardian. He stands on a rocky ground with one hand raised as if shielding his eyes. Carved of wood and painted with mineral pigments and gold. His eyes are painted glass.

Antique Japanese screen painting (byobu) in two panels with a view over a garden fence. Tall white chrysanthemum flowers blossom near a stand of small blue Matsumoto asters. In the background is a mist of silver leaf. Painted in mineral pigments, raised gofun and silver leaf on paper.

Hard to find: Large antique Kyo-yaki Suiseiji Mizutori Suichu (also called "mizutsugi").It is a Japanese ewer, an utensil used in the sado and sencha tea ceremony to replenish the jar that holds water for rinsing teabowls and filling the iron kettle at the tea ceremony.

The bowl is decorated inside with ducks and enamel plants in the style of the "Famille Verte" we find the colors fired at low temperature aubergine, green, some very rare touches of blue and the fragile iron red, detail in gold. This model is a faithful representation of the American privateer ship built in New York at the beginning of the 19th century. The model is of exceptional quality. It may be that it was built from a kit from the 70s but the multitude of excellent details leads me to believe that it is a unique work created from scratch by a virtuoso model maker. A set of large Abalone Shell Shaped bowls covered in ash glaze with liquid pools of jade green by Murakoshi Takuma enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hai-yu O-Awabi Bachi. This is one of his most popular forms, and we had to get to the kiln immediately after firing to garner a few sets. Perfect for winter food, Oden or even Niku-jaga. A fabulous little Tsubo excavated from the sea of embers on the floor of an Anagama kiln by Murakoshi Takuma enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The body is entirely encrusted inside and out with a thick layer of charred natural ash encrustations, one side with a rivulet of shiny glass wrapping the neck. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 20 cm (8 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
