Old Chin tube skirt, circa 1950, from the Khumi subgroup in Burma. although deceptively simple is really extremely complex; please note in enlargements that the reverse side of this textile does not show any of the pattern on the front. This is made on a backstrap loom of very fine homespun cotton with a beaded fringe along the selvedge. Some stains and a few small holes. L: 180cm/71in and W: 44cm/17.2in

A Chinese ruyi scepter carved from beautiful zitan wood, a symbol of good fortune used in Buddhist ceremonies. "Ruyi" directly translates into "as you wish". It has been ornately carved with lingzhi mushrooms on the head and running down the curved handle, which ends in a gnarled root form. High quality carve work. The Ming dynasty tradition of mortise and tenon joinery can be seen and experienced in this later Ming form day bed. The Zitan bed platform rests soundly on all four inverted horse hoof legs. Mortise corners frame the woven bamboo rattan seat cover. For added flexibility, roped lacing and carved wooden support structures help reinforce the durability of its function.
