Sold, with thanks! A unique Yin and Yang vase splashed with two moons, one dark, one light, by Hamada Shoji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yakishime Kakiwake Henko. The Ma or use of blank space (here the Yakishime raw clay) is quite unusual for this Mashiko potter. Kakiwake refers to the application of two glazes separated. The vessel is 23 cm (9 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

$450.00 Utsushi Aka-raku tea bowl called 'Seppo' (snow on the mountain peak) made by great contemporary artist Shoraku Sasaki. It comes with its originally signed and sealed wooden box. This Seppo Bowl is a replica of the famous tea bowl made by Honami Koetsu (see last picture), who was one of the most famous artists during the Edo period (1600's). He was known as the 'Da Vinci' of Japan. The original item, designated as an important culture asset, has been currently maintained at the Hatakeyama Memo... $300.00 Flower vase with angular shoulder and angular hip, slightly curving in on the sides and standing on a bamboo node foot. Heavy but fine gray stoneware that turned reddish brown upon firing, covered with a celadon green glaze with curved striations made by tracing with his finger. The places where the glaze is scraped back to the stoneware, the clay turned red-brown during firing. Neck covered in cream-colored glaze, inside brown speckled glaze, all typical for Mashiko.
