The Chinese Mandarin Court Necklace or Chao Zhu was an insignia of rank during the Qing dynasty. The Mandarin Necklace is comprised of 108 beads; 4 sections of 27 beads each. Rare early 20th century Yi minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2002. I assume this is now an extinct craft no longer being done because of the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. Lovely Chinese basket most likely woven by the Zhuang or another of the many ethnic minorities in Guangxi Zhuang, China where I bought this over 20 years ago. This woven from split reed stalks and has a nice soft feel to it. This piece is quite old, 50 to 100 years (best guess). It has an unusual trapezoidal/oval shape and I like it for its sturdy simplicity. Minor unraveling of some of the weaves here and there but in very good condition given it age. Cheerful Chinese large bamboo brush pot featuring several scenes which consist of a boy and girl feeding five little biddies (chicks), a man dancing, a dog barking, and 4 boys playing hide and seek. All in a garden setting with a fence and mountainous rocks. In very good condition, there is some old insect damage to the base bottom rim. See last photo. Measures 6.75 inches high, 5" diameter. Antique Japanese ranma (architectural transom carving for over a door). Made all of hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood, this carving is a rare beauty in it's detail. A cross section view of a gnarled plum branch in bloom along side a stand of bamboo. The straight leaves of the bamboo contrasts sharply with the curving tendrils and round blossoms of the plum tree. Carved in a 3 dimensional style so that the view is different on each side.

Chinese cloisonne and enamel figurine of a peacock standing in a planter with flowers. The bird's body and the rocks are silver while the cloisens (cloisonne wiring) are both silver and gold. The planter is gold gilded bronze and the grass in the planter is represented by green guilloche enameling. In very good antique condition, it measures 3 inches long, 3.75" high. Circa 1900
