Song Dynasty Jun ware brush shaper or brushwasher. This was originally the base of flower vase which was later reworked into a scholar’s object. On top of the cover, the motif of a butterfly was decorated.
This box was rarely found when the cover's decoration was done with hand-shaped motif.
