Antique Japanese Noh mask of the O-beshimi fierce deity, or mythical tengu. "Beshimi" means "mouth clamped shut". This mask is hand-carved from kiri wood, and inside you can see the chisel marks left behind by the artist. There are visible traces of white gesso in the crevices of the face, which was used as a filler to cover the wood grain. Edo period, 19th century Size: 9.5" tall, 7" wide

This is a very nice Meiji vase from Meizan. It has excellent gold detail and enameling. It is even finished off at the inner top rim area with fine white enamel beads. The work rivals that from the Yabu Meizan factory and it is believed that some of the Meizan artists went on to work for Yabu Meizan. This beautiful 5 inch piece has slight wear to the gold but overall is in outstanding condition.

DESCRIPTION: A fine, large Chinese boxwood toggle in the shape of a Chinese coin with four script characters on each side surrounding the square hole. Around the edge, various plant and animal forms are carved in high relief, including a flower, bird, squirrel and bat. The suspension cord, connecting it to an object such as a tobacco pouch, would have been strung through the openings under the bat's wings. Very detailed repousse made of copper depicting the Hindu deity Krishna, seen holding a spear in one hand and some sort of vine in the other. He has worshippers on either side of him, adorned in lavish jewelry, headdresses, and scarves. Behind Krishna is the winged holy being Garuda, who serves as the mount to Lord Vishnu. 19th century. Antique Tibetan kapala, or human skullcup, with a beautiful bronze stand. In Tibet, it was considered a great honor to have one's cranium turned into a kapala, which would be used for religious purposes. Kapalas are used in the Hindu Tantra and Buddhist religions. Antique Chinese snuff bottle made of peking glass (Tao Liao Ping), with an orange background and white and bright green glass overlay, hand carved into the shape of flowers on a vine. A refined antique Chinese painting done in a style similar to Western style paintings. These paintings were thought to be done in the Canton Concessions in Guangzhou during the late 19th century. Often these works depicted scenes of daily life in the streets of the Qing Period. This particular view is showing two martial artists showing their skills. A pair of two different paintings depicting different views of people either engaged in different activities. One scene appears to show a soldier like figure coming back or meeting a lady and another scene is depicting a family at leisure. Particular elements have elements similar to Chinese theatrical costuming and designs. The techniques are more Western since these works were made in Guangzhou in the Canton concessions. An interesting set of two Chinese Canton paintings depicting two festival scenes that were possibly seen on the streets in China during the Qing dynasty. The top view depicts a figure riding a horse and people are flocking to receive blessings. The bottom scene is showing a theatrical troupe passing by. A beautiful image of a massive swimming carp - a noble fish. Finely painted on silk with ink. The signature reads shikibuno sato yusen hironobu. Kano Hironobu(1778-1814) was active in the late Edo period. He inherited the hamacho kano family and became a court painter.
