The raw red flesh glows softly under a coating of ash which wraps around in tendrils to the coal blackened base of this voluminous Vase by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Yohen Tsubo. Yohen, literally translated Kiln-altered, is a word for the unexpected results, or fortuitous accidents of firing. In this case, they are likely speaking of the unusual red coloration. Kiln effects are what this family is known for, and this does not disa...

How perfectly does this vessel show off the character of clay?! Furutani Taketoshi has built up the clay I a method allowing the natural rough surface to remain undisturbed, a deep gouge around the shoulder filled with a pool of alpine green crystals and the neck meandering up like a natural crag. Soft gray underlies the flying ash and rivulets of fresh green cascading down the sides. The beauty of Shigaraki lies in its ability to connect the various elements of nature from which it is create...

A cylinder has been removed from this cylindrical vase, quite a striking shape by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Ohen Ichirin Hanaire. The hollow created has filled with a heavy deposit of ash with fingers of color reaching out from the dark interior wrapping around the vessel to the red eyelets. The top too is heavily coated in glistening molten ash in grays and greens, olives and ochers. It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter, 21 cm (just...

This bowl is just an ideal look at the many aspects for which Shigaraki is known. The entire is incredibly natural looking, as if erosion and growth have spent eons together creating the paternation. This of course, truly happens over about 5 days, the effects born from the natural combination of fire, ash, flow and placement within the kiln. It is 11 x (4-1/4 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist
Furutani Taketoshi was born the...
