The dye technique is tsutsugaki and bingata-zome which is traditional Okinawan dyeing technique adding colorful vegetable color or pigment. Small tea or wine bowl, enameled in Famille rose colours with an auspicious cricket among flowers, the background a light greyish green. China, Tongzhi period, the base with some residue, possibly from an exportation seal. Height "1 ½ / 4 and diameter "2 ½/ 6 cm. Condition: fine.

Two double hinged doors open to a spacious storage area that includes 2 shallow drawers and 2 large compartments. Four side by side drawers along the top gives additional storage to this piece. An antique Japanese Ko Bo Tansu (personal storage chest with locking bar) made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. Hinged door hides three small drawer behind. Unusual tapered locking bar design. All original finish and hand made iron fittings with Kakute handles.

Contemporary uses include using it as a bedside nightstand or complementing any room as a side table.

A kakemono presenting an example of calligraphy by Shunsui Rai, 1743 ~ 1813. Shunsui was a Confucian scholar of some influence in the Hiroshima district and an historian. He is the father of Sanyo Rai, 1781~1832, who also became a notable calligrapher and a painter and scholar.

Overall the dimensions are 170cm x 36cm. The picture size is 91cm x 25cm. The scroll ends are rosewood. Good condition overall with just minor horizontal creases noted.
